Workshop

New event for 2024-2025! Our performance classes give WCMS students and adult learners an opportunity to practice what it will be like to perform in a recital. There will be no audience, just the other participants in the class.
Each class is hosted by a WCMS faculty member who will offer encouragement and helpful tips. This class will help students develop a performance routine, checklists, and a narrative to encourage successful performances in their future.

Whether you are an experienced Dalcroze clinician or a music educator interested in learning about the Dalcroze approach, we invite you to bring your ideas and try out activities guided by an expert Dalcroze clinician. Participants should bring a teaching activity to share with the group, if possible. Workshop fee: $10.

Have you wanted to improve your ability to play solos quickly and smoothly on the guitar? In this workshop, Guitar & Contemporary Music Department Chair Aiden Schnell will teach participants the basics of playing over simple chord changes using chord shapes and the pentatonic scale.
Open to all guitar players ages 12+ with at least three years of lessons. Please bring your instrument!
Free for WCMS students; $15 for the general public. Advance registration is required.

You'll learn about the history of these incredible instruments from Trinidad and Tobago, receive instruction on how to play, and learn a new song together each session. Would you like to improve your sight-reading ability? For students who are preparing for auditions, sight-reading is often the most challenging part of the process. In this 90-minute session, oboe teaching artist Kyoko Hida-Battaglia will work with students on sight-reading technique. We will practice sight-reading rhythm patterns without instruments, then work on reading examples similar to those you might encounter in a live audition.
All woodwind and brass students from sixth grade through adults are welcome. Please bring your instrument and the etude book you are using in your lessons.

WCMS Piano Evaluations are a springtime performance opportunity for dedicated students of WCMS faculty. They are only open to students of WCMS teachers by recommendation.
How do they work?
Students prepare a program to perform for a panel of two teaching artists and receive detailed, constructive feedback. The student's teacher determines the repertoire and scale requirements for their evaluation. These evaluations are designed to encourage growth and artistic expression for students of all ages.
